Question

Can you please explain the concepts of "wahdatul wujud" and "wahdatul shuhud". Are these beliefs those that take a person out of Islam or are they valid beliefs that are to be adopted? Please explain in detail.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Those who believe in the ideology of pantheism say that the Creator and creation coexist together as one. They do not affirm the existence of the Creator separate from the creation, as one being created by the other. Rather, they say that the Creator is the creation and the creation is the Creator; Allaah is Exalted and High above what they associate to Him.  This is, of course, disbelief, which takes a person out of the fold of Islam.

According to them, the Creator is created, and this is also what they call “Shuhud wihdatul wujood”; this is a clear disbelief, and we issued Fataawa 87768 and 83951 clarifying the falsehood of this ideology and that it takes the person out of the fold of Islam.

Allaah Knows best.
