Took the name Yaseen when he embraced Islam

Question

I have just read a Fatwa concerning naming children Yaseen and it was indicated that this was undisireable. When I converted and took a muslim name I chose Yaseen, Am I in error? Should I then change this ?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, all perfect praise be to Allaah, Who guided you to Islam and we ask Him to make you firm and steadfast on His Religion until the day you meet Him, and we thank you for visiting our site.

We have already issued Fatwa 93757 clarifying that it is disliked to be named with the name Yaseen as it is a name of a chapter in the Quran.

Nonetheless, we hope that you are not sinful for being named with the name Yaseen as it is only disliked and not forbidden to be named with this name especially that you took this name while not knowing the religious ruling about it. However, if you are able to change your name into another name, then this is better and more appropriate.

Allaah Knows best.
