The Jews Gloat over Misfortunes that Afflicted the Muslims

The Jews were constantly trying to cause harm to the Muslims and search for anyone who could sow dissention among them. For example, during the early months, they exploited the death of Abu Umaamah (As‘ad bin Zuraarah Al-’Ansaari Al-Khazraji), may Allah be pleased with him, who was one of the twelve deputies who gave the pledge to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) in what is known as the Second Pledge of Al-‘Aqabah. He had a disease that caused the face and the body to become red. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) visited him and said twice, “What an exploitable dead man for the Jews. They may [exploit his death] saying that his companion [i.e. Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) ] could not treat him while I do not possess for myself any benefit or harm. Nevertheless, I will try to do something that may treat him.” He ordered him to be cauterized on his head with two lines, but he died. Al-Haakim, may Allah be pleased with him, judged this Hadeeth as Saheeh (authentic), which was approved by Ath-Thahabi may Allah have mercy upon him.

In another narration, “The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) cauterized him on the neck in a circular form, but he died. Therefore he said: ‘What an exploitable dead man for the Jews. They will [exploit his death] saying that his companion [i.e. Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) ] treated him without any use’”.

This was not the only incident that shed light on the grudge that the Jews held against the Muslims. Immediately after the Hijrah (emigration), they rumored that they had put a spell on the Muslims not to have male children. They did so with the aim of vexing the Muslims and embittering their new life in Madeenah. They also tried to ruin the atmosphere of love and harmony among the Muslims. One would know to what extent this rumor was harmful when he knows how the Muslims rejoiced at having the first male child from the Muhaajroon (emigrants). He was ‘Abdullaah bin Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him. ’Asmaa’ bint Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with her, said

I conceived ‘Abdullah while I was still in Makkah. Then, I set out [for emigration to Madeenah] as I was in the advanced stage of pregnancy. I reached Madeenah and stopped at Qubaa' and gave birth there. I took him to the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) and he placed him [the child] in his lap, and then requested a date. He chewed the date and then put the saliva in the baby’s mouth. The first thing which went into the baby’s stomach was the saliva of the Messenger sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ). He then rubbed the inside of the child’s mouth with a chewed date, supplicated for him and invoked blessings for him. He was the first child who was born in Islam [after Hijrah]. Therefore, the Muslims rejoiced greatly at his birth, because they were told that the Jews had cast a spell on them not to have male children. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

In another narration

He [the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) ] named him [i.e. the child] ‘Abdullaah. Later, ‘Abdullaah, may Allah be pleased with him, went to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) when he was seven or eight years old in order to pledge allegiance to him as [his father] Az-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, had ordered him to do so. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) smiled when he saw him coming towards him and accepted his pledge of allegiance.

‘Abdullaah, may Allah be pleased with him, was the first male child to be born in Madeenah after the Hijrah, while the Jews rumored that they had cast a spell on the Muslims not to have male children in Madeenah. Hence, the Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) made Takbeer [i.e. said Allahu Akbar “Allah Is The Greatest” loudly] when he was born. [Al-Haakim in Al-Mustadrak]
