Performing a Hajj paid for by a disbeliever

Question

Is it permissible to perform Hajj if its expenses are gifted by the owner of the company I work for? Please note that he is a Moroccan Jew.

 

Fatwa

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible for you to perform a Hajj whose expenses are gifted by the disbeliever you have mentioned. This is supported by the fact that the Prophet accepted gifts from the polytheists.

There is nothing wrong in accepting a gift from a disbeliever to perform acts of worship and acts that help one draw nearer to Allah, like the example of a disbeliever building a mosque. This is so provided that the gift does not include a bribe or results in loving the disbeliever, taking him as an ally or giving up some Sharee‘ah rulings in return for it.

The gifted money does not make Hajj obligatory upon you, and you are not considered as one who is (financially) able to perform it on account of this gift according to the majority of scholars.
