A British man kidnapped in Afghanistan was found dead yesterday, three days after he was seized by gunmen during a bloody attack on a convoy, an Afghan government spokesman said yesterday.

David Addison, who was working on security for a road project in the west of the country, was kidnapped with an interpreter after gunmen ambushed their convoy and killed three police escorts on Wednesday.

"During search operations, coalition forces and Afghan forces found the body of David Addison," said Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal.

A British embassy spokesman said: "The identity has not been formally confirmed but the body is presumed to be that of David Addison."

Addison was seized on the main road between the southwestern city of Kandahar and the western city of Herat.

Meanwhile, Taliban have stabbed to death a pro-government cleric, and five people were wounded in a bomb blast at a religious gathering in Afghanistan, officials said yesterday.

The cleric Mullah Amir Akhund was killed on Thursday in southern Helmand province, said Mohammad Wali, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

The Taliban also claimed they had executed five people, including a candidate in the upcoming polls and a district governor, in southern Afghanistan.
