The Lion of Allaah, Hamzah ibn ‘Abdul-Muttalib

Question:

Who is known as the 'Lion of Allah', is it Hamza ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib or Ali ibn Abi Talib? I know that Hamza was known as the Lion of God and the Lion of Heaven for his bravery and that our prophet Muhammad had also bestowed upon him the titles of the ‘Lion of Heaven,’ and the ‘Chief of the Martyrs’. Since I am from India and I have heard many people, especially shias and sufis, saying that Ali ibn Abi Talib is the Lion of Allah (Shere Khuda). Can you please explain the correct view to me? It may be that after the tragic death of Hamza ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib in the battle of Uhud, Ali ibn Abi Talib was later proclaimed the Lion of Allah.
Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds.  I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

According to the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them it was Hamzah ibn 'Abdul-Muttalib may Allaah be pleased with him who was nicknamed ‘the Lion of Allaah’; we already explained this in Fatwa 87558.

When the above name is mentioned, it refers to Hamzah may Allaah be pleased with him. However, there are many ‘lions of Allaah’, who fought for the sake of Allaah The Almighty, and there is no doubt that 'Ali may Allaah be pleased with him was one of them. He was known for his bravery and strength, but the above expression (i.e. ‘the Lion of Allaah’) does not refer to him but to Hamzah may Allaah be pleased with him as we already mentioned.

Finally, it should be noted that such a matter should not be a reason for disputes.
