Using bricks in Tayammum

Question:

Can 'Tayamum' can be done using a 'Brick'

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Tayammum is permitted with the earth –which means with anything which originally comes from the earth –even if it is not soil, according to the correct opinion of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them.

Therefore, if you are asking about the brick which is the block of clay hardened by burning in a kiln, and used for building, then the view of the majority of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them is that it is not permissible to perform Tayammum with it because it was transformed and changed from its original nature. However, the Hanafi scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them permitted it.

Nevertheless, if you are asking about the dry mud, then it is permissible to perform Tayammum with it, according to the Maaliki and Hanafi Schools, because it originally comes from earth.
