The period of time one can stay in his relatives’ house

Question:

how long we can stay in the house of our relatives?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

There is no specific limited period of time in Sharee’ah regarding a person’s stay in the house of his relatives. He may reside as long as he wishes provided they do not prevent him. However, he should not overburden them. If he notices that they dislike his long stay amongst them, or that there is no reason for him in staying for a long time, then he should hasten to leave, as this leads to more affection and it is a way of avoiding hatred and enmity between them. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: If you make your visits at intervals, you will be more loved (i.e. those whom he visits would love him more).
