Question:

Did Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) divorce any of his wives? I heard a narration that one of his wives on the first night of their marriage told him “I seed refuge in Allah from you”, then Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) left the house. Is this an authentic narration? If yes, did he just leave her or divorce her?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) did divorce some of his wives, among whom was Hafsah bint ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with her. However, it is confirmed that he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, took her back. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Jibreel (Gabriel) said to me: “Take Hafsah back, as she is a woman who frequently fasts during the day and regularly prays at night, and she will be your wife in Paradise.” [Al-Haakim]

As for the woman who sought refuge in Allaah The Almighty from the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) she was Umaymah bint Sharaaheel may Allaah be pleased with her and the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) divorced her and it was not reported that he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, took her back.

It is reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) told her: “You sought refuge in The Greatest (i.e. Allaah), go back to your family”, meaning “I am divorcing you”. [Al-Bukhari]

Allaah Knows best.
