Question:

Assalamualaikum W.B.T. May I kindly ask ; 1) How many Hadiths known and proven to be SAHIH, WEAK and FABRICATED Hadith ? 2) How can we identify if some Hadiths are either SAHIH, WEAK or FABRICATED (FALSIFIED) ? 3) Can we follow Weak Hadith ? Ma'a Salamah.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is not possible to determine how many authentic narrations are reported from the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) because they are so many and are reported in many different religious books of Sunnah.

However, some scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them did state the number of authentic narrations especially in some books of Sunnah. For instance, they stated that the number of narrations in Al-Bukhari –and all the narrations reported by him are authentic –is 7397 including the repeated narrations, and without the repeated narrations it is 2602.

As regards how we can rule that a specific narration is authentic or else, then you should know that the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them have set some conditions which must be met for a narration to be considered authentic, and any narration which does not meet those conditions, is either a Hasan narration or a Dha’eef (weak) one.

For more benefit on the difference between Saheeh, Hasan and Dha’eef Hadeeths, please refer to Fataawa 83741 and 91717, and to Fatwa 86128 on the conditions of accepting the weak Hadeeth.

Allaah Knows best.
