Question:

ASSALAMALIKUM SILK CLOTHES ARE NOT PERMITTED FOR MEN BUT CAN HE HAVE SILK BED SHEETS & PILLOW COVERS OR CURTAINS OR ANY OTHER FORM OF SILK IN THE HOUSE.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The jurists may Allaah have mercy upon them had different opinions in regard to the ruling on a man using silk other than the clothes, like a pillow, bed sheets [and blankets] and the like; some permitted them and some prohibited them.

The view we adopt here in Islamweb is that it is not permissible for men to use silk carpets, or carpets which are partly fabricated with silk, at home or else, based on the general narrations which prohibit a man from using silk. This is of course if the silk which is added to the carpet is more than a half. The prohibition of hanging silk curtains, especially on walls, is more confirmed because hanging curtains on walls in general is disliked; hence, silk curtains are even more prohibited.

As regards window curtains and other things which need to be covered, then it is permissible to use silk fabrics as expressed by the Shaafi’i School of jurisprudence.

Allaah Knows best.
