Drinking with the left hand while supporting the glass with the right hand

Question:

Salaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullaah ... Dear Shaikh, Please advice if we can drink with our left hand while supporting the glass with our right hand (from the bottom), as is usually practiced in India? Jazaak Allaahu Khairan
Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

 

There are religious texts which severely prohibit eating and drinking with the left hand as we discussed in Fatwa 82099, so a Muslim should not contravene them and imitate the devil and the proud and negligent people.

What you mentioned in the question that some people do, if this is for a need, like because of one's right hand being busy, then we hope that this is permissible, Allaah willing, because it is drinking with both hands, and it is not drinking with the left hand. It is confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) drank from a container, a skin and a bucket, and in most cases both hands are used to drink from these items.
