Wearing gemstones

Question:

Assalamualikum, 1. What gemstones are encouraged to be worn in Islam for both male and female? 2. What kind of rings did Prophet Muhammad SAW wore on his fingers? 3. Are there any hadiths or in the Quran mentioning wearing of gemstones encouraged in Islam?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We are not aware of any evidence that urges men and women to wear gemstones. However, according to the view of the majority of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them the women are allowed to wear them whereas the men are disliked to wear them because this is an act of extravagance and it is an imitation to women, as we clarified in Fatwa 83926.

However, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) had a silver ring; for more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 90282.

Allaah Knows best.
