Offering a sacrifice on behalf of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam

Question:

Assalamualikum, Is it mandatory to give a sacrifice on our prophet's (SAWS) name & then on other's name on Eid-ul-Adh-ha?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is not an obligation for whoever wants to offer a sacrifice to offer another sacrifice on behalf of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) or on behalf of any other dead person. We are not aware of any evidence from the Sharee’ah about this. Furthermore, as far as we know, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) did not order his nation to offer a sacrifice on his behalf.

What is legislated for a Muslim to do is to offer a sacrifice for himself and his family as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) did.
