Question:

I have trouble understanding ayah#7 from Surat alisraa. Is it describing an event that will take place near the end of time or what And is this-what we're witnessing now-the second ifsaad? Also does the ayah mean that they will build a temple in place of al aqsa? Jazakum Allah kul khair ibtissam

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Allaah Says (what means): {[And said], “If you do good, you do good for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it] to them [i.e. yourselves].” Then when the final [i.e. second] promise came, [We sent your enemies] to sadden your faces and to enter the Masjid [i.e. the temple in Jerusalem], as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had taken over with [total] destruction.}[Quran 17:7]

The above verse and other verses before it that are related to it include many matters which we will summarize in the following:

1-     The children of Israel will cause corruption in the land twice, Allaah Says (what means): {And We conveyed to the Children of Israel in the Scripture that, “You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach [a degree of] great haughtiness.”}[Quran 17:4] A degree of great haughtiness means pride, transgression, tyranny, arrogance, predominance and aggression. Indeed, this corruption had already taken place by them killing the Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention.

2-     When they had caused the first corruption, Allaah sent to them soldiers from among His Creation who are strong and have military might and great authority who would occupy their country and would probe into [going through and between] their homes, and they would go forth and back fearing no one and it was a promise fulfilled. Allaah Says (what means): {So when the [time of] promise came for the first of them, We sent against you servants of Ours — those of great military might, and they probed [even] into the homes, and it was a promise fulfilled.}[Quran 17:5] This had already taken place when Allaah sent to them Bukhtunassar (Nebuchadnezzar II), and it was said when Allaah sent to them the Tyrants (or Giants).

3-     Allaah gave back victory to the children of Israel over their enemy when they had repented to Him, Allaah Says (what means): {Then We gave back to you a return victory over them. And We reinforced you with wealth and sons and made you more numerous in manpower.}[Quran 17:6] This happened when the children of Israel were victorious over the soldiers of Jaalout (Goliath), and Daawood (David) may Allaah exalt his mention killed him.

4-     The verses inform us that the children of Israel will cause corruption in the land a second time, and at this time Allaah will send to them people who would humiliate them and overcome them and they would occupy Baytul Maqdis (Jerusalem). Allaah Says (what means): {Then when the final [i.e. second] promise came, [We sent your enemies] to sadden your faces and to enter the Masjid [i.e. the temple in Jerusalem], as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had taken over with [total] destruction.}[Quran 17:7] It was said that this had taken place and Allaah sent to them the companions may Allaah be pleased with them who conquered Baytul Maqdis. It was also said that this corruption had taken place when they tried to kill ‘Eesa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention and Allaah sent to them people who destroyed them.

5-     Allaah promised that whenever the children of Israel would corrupt again, Allaah will send to them again people who would destroy them. Allaah Says (what means): {But if you return [to sin], We will return [to punishment].}[Quran 17:8] There is no doubt that they have greatly corrupted at this present time, and they will not be an exception from their predecessors who were destroyed. Rather, Allaah will send to them people who will afflict them with the worst torment and destroy them. Among this torment is that the Muslims will fight against the Jews before the Hour (at the end of time), and the Muslims will kill them until the stones and trees would call “O slave of Allaah, O Muslim, this is a Jew behind me, come and kill him”, as confirmed in a Prophetic narration. However, there is no mention in the verse that the Jews would destroy Al-Aqsa Mosque and that they would build a temple instead. The verse did not elaborate on this. Nonetheless, if the Jews do this, then this will be a corruption on the land and Allaah will send to them people who will destroy them. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 91401.

Allaah Knows best.
