Question:

what is the meaning of the word "taraddee" in the Hadeeth " Allahumma inny a'uootho bika minat-taraddee....."?
Jazakumullahu khayran

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The origin of the word Taraddee is derived from Ar-Rada which is death. Here [in the narration] it means falling down from a high place, like falling down from a high mountain, or falling into a well, and the like. Indeed, these are calamities from which one seeks the refuge of Allaah. However, it is not permissible for a Muslim to do this voluntarily, otherwise he is disobedient. Nonetheless, if it happens without him causing it, it will be an expiation of his sins, and if he dies because of it, he is a martyr.
