Putting water and seeds when visiting graves

6-12-2007 | IslamWeb

Question:

Is it permissible to put water and seeds beside the grave?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

Putting water and seeds on a grave contradicts the Sunnah. Moreover, the claim that water cools down a dead person or has any other effect is wrong, because only good deeds, the supplication of a righteous son or a deed whose reward was offered to the dead person can cool them down.

Once Abdullaah Ibn ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him saw a shelter over a grave and he ordered it to be removed, stating that it is a person's good deeds that shelter him. [Al-Bukhaari]

Allaah Knows best.
