Question:

My husband who is muslim and I will be living with my parents who are catholics. Their house is full of crosses, and virgin mary statues. Can my muslim husband and me live in a house that has statues of Jesus, of the Virgin Mary, and crosses hanging from the walls?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If you are not able to reside in another house where there are no such statues, then it becomes permissible for you to reside in this house. However, it should be noted that you should perform the prayer in a place where there is no such statues as we clarified in Fatwa 88699.

Moreover, you should know that the only religion accepted by Allaah is Islam; Allaah Says (what means): {And whoever desires other than Islam as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.}[Quran 3:85]

Therefore, you should endeavour to call your parents to Islam as this is the best act of kindness and dutifulness to them, and being affectionate to them. Moreover, calling people to Islam is one of the best acts of worship that Allaah likes and gives for it a great reward. Also, among the means of Da’wah (calling people to Allaah) is seeking the Help of Allaah, being kind to the person whom one calls to Islam, and supplicating Allaah earnestly while not being in a hurry to get the result.

Finally, you may make use of the following Fataawa in calling your parents to Islam: Fatwa 111063, Fatwa 85456, Fatwa 102075, Fatwa 86091, Fatwa 88906, and Fatwa 85234.

Allaah Knows best.
