Makkah is the best place on earth

Assalamu Alaykum,
Is Makkah the best and holiest place on earth in the sight of God?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

 

Makkah is the best place on earth and it is better than Al-Madeenah according to the view of the majority of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon him. They have many pieces of evidence about this, among which is the following:

1-    Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him said: “The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) addressed Makkah, saying: “How good you are as a town and how dear you are to my heart! Had your people not forced me out of you, I would have never resided in any other city but you.” [At-Tirmithi] Al-Mubaarakpoori may Allaah have mercy upon him said (when interpreting the above Hadeeth reported by At-Tirmithi): “This evidence supports the opinion of the majority of the scholars that Makkah is better than Al-Madeenah.”

2-    ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Adiyy ibn Hamraa’ Az-Zuhri may Allaah be pleased with him said: “I saw the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) standing on Al-Hazwarah (a place in Makkah) addressing Makkah, saying: “I swear by Allaah, you are the best of lands of Allaah and you are the most beloved land to Allaah, and had it not been that I was driven out of you, I would have never left you”. [Ahmad, At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah] When Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him was asked: “Is Makkah better than Al-Madeenah or vice-versa?”, he said: “Makkah, may Allaah guard it, is the most honorable place.”
