Question:

my situation is that i have 3 children of which 2 are disabled and have been told by doctors that there is a 75% chance of any future children being disabled. so am i allowed in islam to have a vasectomy.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have already issued Fatwa 84086 clarifying the decision of the Islamic Fiqh Committee which prohibits permanent birth control. The probability of having disabled children is not a sound reason for carrying out a vasectomy [permanent birth control] For more benefit, refer to Fataawa 89857 and 86967.

It might be that if you leave the matter to Allaah and have children, perhaps you will be blessed with children who are normal and not disabled. Even if you get a disabled child, Allaah may benefit you and your wife with him/her in this world and the Hereafter and Allaah may make him/her benefit the Muslim nation as well.

Therefore, we advise you to turn to Allaah and supplicate to Him to predestine for you what is good as Allaah urged His servants to supplicate Him and He promised them to respond to their supplications. Allaah Says (what means): {And your Lord Says, "Call upon Me; I Will Respond to you."}[Quran 40:60]

Allaah Knows best.
