Question:

Salaam Alaykum, What is the concept of Eidy in Islam? Juniors mostly expect money or some sort of gifts from their elders at Eid festivel. Is this belief connected with the companiions of Prophet Muhammad (Salallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam)? Jazaak ALLAHu Khair.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have not come across anything which proves that this tradition has a foundation in the life of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and his Companions may Allaah be pleased with them. However, Islamically, it is permissible as per the Fatwa issued by the Permanent Committee of Fatwa in Saudi Arabia and they said that it is from the good traditions and making the Muslim happy – whether he is young or old – and this is a matter that is urged by the noble Sharee’ah.

Allaah Knows best.
