Assalamu alaikum brother, my officemate made me confused for giving name for the new born baby girl her name [Fatima Zarifah], my officemate told me that name is not acceptable then i asked him why, he told me ask for the schoolar (have knowledge in Islam)so please brother can ou give me idea/knowledge why not acceptable? Jazakallahu khair...

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have already issued Fataawa 82724 and 87262 clarifying the guidelines that have to be considered when naming a new-born baby. Therefore, if the name does not contain a religious prohibition, then this name is not forbidden. Hence, it appears that it is permissible to name the new-born with this name "Fatima Zarifah".

If that person means that it is forbidden to name a child with a compound name, then this is not correct because it is permissible to name a new-born child with a compound name as we clarified in Fatwa 97198.

Allaah Knows best.
