The dead are aware of what is happening in life

Question:

Can the dead person remember life and everything in it; the markets, streets, public places and so on? If a woman dies as a martyr, does she know whether her husband in life will be her husband in the Hereafter?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

The affairs of the dead are part of the Unseen that cannot be verified except through authentic proof from the Quran or Sunnah. There is no proof about whether or not the dead person can remember places in life. However, it is sufficient for the believer to know that the dead person will be questioned in his grave and that he will be accompanied by his good or evil deeds. He will be either in bliss or in torment. This is according to the proven texts of Sharee‘ah; and it has also been proven that the souls of the believers ask those who die after them about specific people in life.

We have also clarified the issue of women’s marriage in the Hereafter in Fatwa 3709. In this Fatwa there is no mention of the woman who dies as a martyr; however, she takes the same ruling as other women.

Allaah Knows best.
