Question:

What gifts were given to Fatimah on her marriage from Muhammad (PBUH)?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

There are many narrations about the items that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) gifted Faatimah may Allaah be pleased with her when she got married with ‘Ali may Allaah be pleased with him. For instance, Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him narrated, “When the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) married off Faatimah to ‘Ali, among the items that he gifted her were a bed embellished with ribbon, a leather pillow filled with palm-tree fiber and a water-skin.” [An-Nasaa’i]

Abu Nu’aym may Allaah have mercy upon him reported the above narration in "Hilyatul-Awliyaa’" with the following addition, “…and a copper bowl containing Aqit (dry cottage cheese).” Moreover, Ibn Hibbaan may Allaah have mercy upon him reported that ‘Ali may Allaah be pleased with him said, “The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) prepared Faatimah for marriage with a Khameelah (a white woolen dress), a leather pillow stuffed with palm-tree fiber.”

From the above narrations, we can conclude that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) gifted Faatimah may Allaah be pleased with her a bed, a dress, a pillow, a water-skin and a bowl containing some Aqit.

Allaah Knows best.
