Using contraceptives until she decides whether to continue in the marriage or not

Question:

I am a married woman and there are many problems between my husband and I, which I fear might lead to divorce. Does this allow me to use contraceptives in order not to make matters more complicated if we have children, especially since I do not feel secure or tranquil with him until now, and he also does not financially maintain me.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If you use these contraceptives for a certain period of time until you decide whether to continue in the marriage or not, then – Allaah willing – you bear no sin in this regard, provided that your husband agrees because he has the right to have children. In such a case, you should use contraceptives which do not lead to uncovering the ‘Awrah (private parts) or affecting the ability to conceive, so you must try not to use loops, tubal ligation or the like, because there is no necessity for this. Alternatively, you can use tablets, condoms or injections. You should consult a female doctor before using any of these contraceptives.

Finally, we advise you to do your best to maintain your relationship with your husband and fulfill his rights in the best possible way. Moreover, having children may bring conciliation between your hearts and strengthen the affection between you.

Allaah Knows best.
