Question:

Assalamu alaikum, If a baby is named with two names e.g fathima asma or rahmath fara. is it permissible to call the baby with either one name or should we address the baby with both the names whenever we call them? pls enlighten me regarding this. Jazakallahu khairen

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, it should be mentioned that naming a child with a compound name is permissible as there is no evidence which prohibits doing so. For more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 97198 and 135831.

Also, calling this person with either part of his compound name is permissible if this does not lead to a religious prohibition as it is not an obligation to call him with both names.

Allaah Knows best.
