Question:

What is the ruling on the attitude of Muslim scholars in the current situation faced by the Muslim nation? Will they be regarded as sinful? Will they be reckoned on the Day of Judgment for what is going on today in Jerusalem and its surrounding areas?
I have read that the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, receives daily news of the Muslims. If their deeds are good, the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, is happy; and if they are bad, he is sad. Is this correct?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The current calamities and trials which are being experienced by Muslims everyday sadden one's heart, cause one's tears to overflow, prevent one from sleeping and cause great confusion. All this makes it obligatory upon Muslim scholars to take the lead, explain the truth and call Muslims to improve their situation and prepare themselves to face their enemies. This is the fulfillment of the covenant that the scholars have given to Allaah The Almighty who Says (what means): {And [mention, O Muhammad], when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], "You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it."}[Quran 2:187]

There is no doubt that any Muslim scholar who retreats and remains silent about the truth, or does not concern himself with the Muslims' problems, is considered sinful for neglecting to fulfil the covenant. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said that a believer among the Muslims is like the head on a body, feeling the Muslims' pain just as the head feels the body's agony. [Ahmad: Hasan chain of narrators]

With regard to the second part of your question, there is a weak Hadeeth narrated on the authority of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) in which he told Muslims that him being alive was better for them because they would innovate matters new to the religion and other matters would be innovated for them after his death. According to the rest of the Hadeeth, the death of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was then better for Muslims because their deeds would be reported to him. If he found them good he would thank Allaah The Almighty, otherwise he would ask Allaah The Almighty to forgive them. [Al-Bazzaar: Dha‘eef (Weak), Al-Albaani: Dha‘eef]

In another unauthenticated narration, deeds are reported to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) every Thursday. However, the first part of this Hadeeth contains an addition indicating that the walking angels of Allaah The Almighty notify the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) (merely) of every Salaam that a Muslim confers upon him. [Ahmad, An-Nasaa’i, Ibn Hibbaan and Al-Haakim: Saheeh (Authentic)]

And Allaah Knows best.
