Question:

is it correct according to hazrat Ayesha(R.A)riwayat that women should wear some thing in neck such as necklace or black thread etc?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have not come across any narration with this wording from ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her. However, a similar narration was narrated from her about the dress of the woman during the prayer. Al-Bayhaqi may Allaah have mercy upon him reported in “As-Sunan Al-Kubra” that ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her disliked for a woman to pray without adornment, even if she wears a string around her neck.

Besides, Abdur-Razzaaq may Allaah have mercy upon him reported the same thing in his “Al-Musannaf” from Anas may Allaah be pleased with him that he was asked: “Can a woman pray while wearing no necklace around her neck?” He replied: “A woman should not pray except while wearing a necklace around her neck even if she could not find anything but a cord.”

Moreover, Abdur-Razzaaqk may Allaah have mercy upon him also reported in his “Al-Musannaf” from Ma’mar from Ayyoob from Ibn Seereen that he disliked that a woman prays without having a necklace around her neck. I said: “Why is this?” He replied: “So that she would not resemble men.”

Also, a Dha’eef [weak] narration was reported from the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) which the author of “Kanz Al-Ummaal” attributed to Ibn An-Najjaar. Moreover, As-Suyooti may Allaah have mercy upon him stated in “Al-Jaami’ Al-Kabeer” that it was reported by Ibn Abi Haatim in “Al-‘Ilal” and he classified it as Dha’eef. Its wording is: “O ‘Ali, order your women not to pray without adornments, and order them to dye their hands with Henna so that they (their hands) would not resemble the hands of men.”

Allaah Knows best.
