Swallowing blood breaks one's fast

Question:

During the month of Ramadan, while rinsing my mouth in the morning, some blood comes out from my mouth while performing ablution. What should I do then?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that none is worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

When someone experiences bleeding upon rinsing his mouth while fasting, he is obliged to spit the blood out, and it is not permissible for him to swallow it.

Ibn Qudaamah, the Hanbali scholar may Allaah have mercy upon him said in Al-Mughni: “If one experiences mouth bleeding, vomiting or regurgitation and swallows any of such substances, then his fast is broken, even if the amount is little, because the mouth is considered an outward part.

Shafi‘i and Maliki scholars adopted the same opinion as Hanbali scholars.

Hanafi scholars set a difference between the case where there is more blood than saliva, arguing that the fast is broken then and the other case, where there is more saliva than blood, arguing that it is not broken. The correct opinion is the first one.

Allah Knows best.
