Question:

I am a woman who is about to marry and I am religious, thanks to Allaah. Is it permissible for me to visit my husband's sisters after marriage, noting that they do not follow the way of Allaah and always mix with men? They even spend hours talking and joking with their husbands' male friends and relatives without wearing the Hijaab.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

There is nothing wrong in exchanging visits with your husband's sisters, because the sin of a Muslim does not justify deserting that person, except if this will deter him from sin. In fact, your visits will strengthen the relationships and ties between the entire family, which will have a positive impact on your relationship with your husband and his sisters, and this in turn will make your advice to them more effective, Allaah Willing. This effect is unlikely to happen if you desert them.

However, you have to abide by the rulings of the Sharee‘ah in this regard. Specifically, you should not go out without the permission of your husband, you must adhere to Hijab and non-Mahram men should not be present in the gathering. If these criteria are not fulfilled, then such visits would be impermissible because of the violations involved, such as intermixing, talking, and exchanging gazes between non-Mahram men and women, all of such acts are prohibited matters. Allaah Says (what means): {And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof.} [Quran 24:31]

It is also reported on the authority of ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aamir may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, warned men against meeting women. He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, stressed the warning with regards to the husband’s relatives, to the extent of equalling this to the danger of death." [Al-Bukhari]

In conclusion, such visits are permissible if they are free of any violation. Otherwise, they would be prohibited, based on the abovementioned proofs.

Allaah Knows best.
