Question:

I have an old debt that my husband is unhappy with. I have sold a house and lost a lot of money on it, it happened before I was married. he thinks I lied about it because I was not done with it later than I thought due to interest rates that rose to the double. he does not trust me now, I have shown him my account so he could see it was true what I told him, but he says he can not trust me. what should I do. I know interest is haram, it happened before I became a Muslim

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Try as much as you can to convince your husband of the reality of the matter and explain to him that the debt being existing until now may be as a result of the doubling of the interests of the bank which is often out of the client's control. Remind him that the Muslim should accept the excuse of his fellow Muslim and that is even more stressed with one's spouse.

However, there is no blame on you in general regarding that matter, even if your husband is unhappy because of it, unless you have told him something other than the reality regarding it.

As for that Riba-based loan, there is no sin on you because of that matter; as Islam wipes out the sins that had been committed before it. For more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 83259 and 86230.

As for paying off interests now, if you are able not to pay them off, then this will be incumbent upon you; otherwise, there will be no blame on you that you pay them off. For more benefit, kindly refer to Fatwa 86136.

Allaah Knows best.
