Question:

What would you say about the word dervish?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The word dervish is originally Persian and meant beggar. However, this word has been historically used to refer to a member of a Sufi group.

Sufi groups adopt innovated worship rituals comprising many misconceptions that may lead to polytheism. This is especially so since some Sufis believe that their Shaykh or what they call the "Waliyy" (ally of Allaah) can benefit or harm them. They often seek the help of their Shaykh, dedicate vows for him or slaughter animals as sacrifices for him.

Asceticism that is accompanied by a valid religion free from superstition and innovations is a good thing. An example of this is Shaykh ‘Abdul-Qaadir Al-Jeelaani may Allaah have mercy upon him. However, some Sufis have held incorrect beliefs about him and he is innocent of their claims.

Allaah The Almighty is the One who guides people to the right path.

Allaah Knows best.
