Wearing dental braces just to please the husband

Question:

My husband is not pleased with my teeths and he wants the front teeths to be cut and that I wear braces pure only for beautification, is that permissible? What does islam say about being too honest, like your husband saying that he does not like dark skin colour (i am dark skinned) and that I walk weird etc. Sometimes he really says hurtful things and that makes me really feel insecure about myself and my body. When I say that I don't think it's good to say everything you think. He says he is just being honest and that that is just the way he is.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have previously clarified that wearing dental braces is permissible if it is done for medical reasons and for correcting an apparent deformity. However, it is forbidden if it were done for the sake of beautification. Please refer to Fatwa 88719 and 85149.

A husband is commanded to treat his wife thoughtfully and kindly. Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means): {And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allaah makes therein much good.} [Quran 4:19] The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also advised Muslim men to be kind to their wives. Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Take my advice with regard to women: Act kindly towards women ...” [Muslim] Indeed, using hurtful speech and saying things that annoy or provoke the wife contradict all these imperatives.

We advise you to constantly have patience; verily, patience is the optimal solace for the believers and the key to all that is good. Please, refer to Fatwa 83577 about the virtues of having patience.

You should kindly advise your husband. When advice is adorned with gentleness, patience, and thoughtfulness, it becomes fruitful. In addition, we advise you to supplicate Allaah since supplication is the guarantee of attaining all that is good.

Allaah, The Exalted, has commanded us to pray to Him and promised to answer our supplications. He says (what means): {And your Lord says, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.} [Quran 40:60] Verily, he who has hope is never at loss.

Allaah Knows best.
