Question:

What is closer to the tradition of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and his Companions and their followers: offering the Fajr voluntary prayer at home or in the mosque? Please provide authentic narrations supporting your view. May Allaah Reward you best.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is a part of the tradition of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, to offer the voluntary prayer of Fajr at home for the general indication of his saying, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam: "The best prayer of a person is the one which he offers at home, except the obligatory prayer." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

This was the tradition of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, as reported in Saheeh Al-Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim and other sources. However, it is permissible to offer it in the mosque, but what we mentioned is preferable.

Allaah Knows best.
