Deserting places where evil is practiced

Question:

If I were with a person in a place that he owns such as his car and he was listening to music, and I asked him to switch it off and advised him not to listen to it but he did not agree, would I be sinful? If so, what should I do?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

If you are in a car or any other place where music is played, you should forbid this evil as much as possible. At the same time, you should try to do so gently and argue in the best way possible. If this person is convinced, then it is permissible for you to stay in that place but if he is not, you should get out of the car and ride something else if possible. If you were unable to do so, then you should detest this prohibited act (music) in your heart. If you do this you would not be considered sinful.

Any person who does not change an evil while being able to do so or stays in a place where evil is committed when he is able to leave, would be considered sinful and should repent to Allaah The Almighty.

Allaah Knows best.
