Question:

What is the Islamic ruling on a wife who shaves her pubic hair but leaves some of it unshaved and has a tattoo above it for the sake of beautifying herself for her husband?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Shaving pubic hair is an act of the Sunnah and one of the acts of Fitrah (natural disposition); Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Five are among the acts of Fitrah: circumcision, shaving pubic hair, plucking out armpit hair, clipping one's nails and trimming one's moustache." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Scholars said that acts of Fitrah are the acts of natural disposition, and if one follows them, he would be implementing the acts of innate disposition that Allaah The Exalted urges us to do so as to attain the most perfect traits and best appearance.

It is impermissible for Muslims to leave parts of the pubic hair unshaved for any reason, whether men or women. It is recommended to shave the pubic hair on a weekly basis, and it should not be left unshaven for more than forty days.

As for having a tattoo, it is forbidden under Sharee‘ah (Islamic law); the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, cursed whoever has a tattoo according to the authentic narration narrated by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others on the authority of Ibn Mas‘ood may Allaah be pleased with him.  Hence, it is impermissible for a wife to adorn herself for her husband via such prohibited ways. The Islamic Sharee‘ah deemed a wide variety of ornaments and adornments permissible, which are more beautiful and convenient for decent souls, and they are quite adequate for you rather than doing what Allaah The Exalted has Forbidden.

Allaah Knows best.
