Question:

How authentic is the Hadeeth which says that: "Those who cut lote-trees will be poured into Hell on their heads"? Please cite the reference. May Allaah reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

This Hadeeth is narrated in the following wording: "Anyone who cuts a lote-tree, Allaah brings him headlong into Hell." [Abu Daawood and Al-Bayhaqi] ‘Abdur-Razzaak Al-Mahdy   may Allaah have mercy upon him graded this Hadeeth as Hasan. When Abu Daawood may Allaah have mercy upon him was asked about this Hadeeth, he clarified that it is an condensed version of the original Hadeeth. The original text of the Hadeeth was: "Anyone who cuts a tree in the desert, that travelers and animals shade themselves under, without having any right to do so, Allaah will throw him into Hell on his head."

Allaah Knows best.
