Question:

Assalam Aleikum! I am a Christian girl but my husband is Muslim. We got married a year ago and went to Jordan to live with his parents.(i come from Ukraine). in Jordan we we signed the marriage contract again according to Muslim law. Now his parents force us to get divorced because they saw white patches on my grandmothers hands (vitiligo). They sent me back to Ukraine. I am in despair and i dont know what i can do now. Could you please give some advice to me? The situation seems absurd. Can the Muslim judge help us? I want to save our marriage.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Your husband’s parents have no right to compel your husband to divorce you for this reason and he is not obliged to obey them in this regard. Please refer to Fataawa 84808 and 84056.

The first thing we advise you to do is to hasten to embrace Islam; verily, Islam is the key to attaining genuine bliss in the worldly life and the Hereafter. Please refer to Fataawa 84769, 88906, 88051 and 111063.

If your husband wants to divorce you, then you can relieve him of some of marital duties in return for retaining the marriage with you and keeping you as his wife.

As for the Islamic courts, they can only help you if a dispute over your rights occurs before or after divorce.

Allaah Knows best.
