Fasting during cessation of menstruation

23-7-2012 | IslamWeb

Question:

My wife menstruated for five days before the advent of Ramadhaan. On the first day of Ramadhaan, she observed cessation of the blood discharge and thus she performed Ghusl (ritual bath) and fasted on the second day. After performing the Taraaweeh (voluntary night prayer in Ramadhaan) along with me in the Masjid, the blood was discharged again. Taking into consideration that her menstruation usually lasts from seven to eight days, is she required to make up the fasting of that day?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

According to the Maaliki and Hanbali scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them the fasting of your wife is valid and she is not required to make it up, since she completed the day without menstruating. The Hanbali scholar ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi may Allaah have mercy upon him said, "We mentioned that the period of purification during menstruation is deemed valid. When a woman discharges blood on one day and then she experiences a state of ritual purity in between, she is to combine the days when there is a blood discharge to be regarded as menstruation and the in-between days when there is no blood discharge to be regarded as purification…"

Allaah Knows best.
