Question:

My husband stops me from seeing or speaking to our daughter because she married a man from another tribe. In fact he initially refused that family's proposal and after many months of fights and arguments, their daughter was married off by sheikh in another city. However after 6 months of being married he agreed to repeat their mehar within the mosque of this city to avoid Bad reputation amoung friends and family. All that time, i agreed to everything he said and was avoided my daughter's contact.but could not handle any more and used to contact her privately. Now however, he has given me an ultimatum to choose between him and our daughter. What shall I do

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Your husband does not have the right to prevent you from talking to your daughter in the manner which you mentioned and you are not obliged to obey him in this.

However, we advise you to give him gentle advice and clarify to him that cutting ties with your daughter without any sound reason is not permissible and that he does not have the right to prevent you from maintaining ties with her. It would be better if some relatives and righteous people talk to him about this matter. If he insists on preventing you from talking to her, and you fear that he will divorce you if you do not obey him in this matter, then you may talk to your daughter and keep ties with her without his knowledge.
