Question:

I am a suckling mother who gave birth to a child four months ago. Two days ago, I experienced a flow of blood although I usually have menses nine months after giving birth. Is this menses or not? Please advise. May Allaah Reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

In principle, the blood that flows from a woman, regardless of delivery, is menses until it is proven that it is vaginal bleeding outside the menstrual period. Therefore, the blood you experienced is menses and you are required to observe what the menstruating woman must observe.

Allaah Knows best.
