Question:

sir some one questioned me (in Urdu) that have u done third divorced of your wife I asked him (g?) its a Urdu word and here are two meanings of this word one meaning is yes if I told and second meaning is what if I ask. So I want to ask you that is the divorce has done or not.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

If when you used this word you intended to say "yes", then this is a false acknowledgement of divorce. The Fiqh scholars have differed in opinion about whether or not the false acknowledgement of divorce results in divorce.

The view we consider to be the most valid opinion here at Islamweb is that it does not result in divorce.

However, if you used this word to ask a question, in the sense of "what?", then this does not count as a divorce.

Allaah Knows best.
