Question:

AsSalamu alaykum, What ahlus-sunnah says concerning next two questions: -Did Adam see Allah before he was sent to earth and -did Iblis saw Him before his apostasy ? May Allah reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We are not aware of any evidence which suggests that Aadam (Adam) may Allaah exalt his mention saw his Lord or that Iblees saw his Lord before or after his apostasy. Indeed, we cannot make a judgment about this without evidence, and we cannot simply guess about it. Allaah says (what means): {And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.} [Quran 17:36] Hence, it is better not to speak about such matters.

It is known that Allaah spoke with Aadam may Allaah exalt his mention but this does not necessarily mean that Aadam saw his Lord, as is the situation with Moosa (Moses) may Allaah exalt his mention.

It should be mentioned here that seeing Allaah in this world is rationally possible, but does not actually take place according to the revelation as the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “You know that one of you will not see his Lord until he dies.” [Reported by At-Tirmithi who classified it as Hasan (good) - Al-Albaani classified it as Saheeh (sound)]

An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said in his commentary on Muslim's Saheeh: “I Know that the doctrine of the adherents of the Sunnah on the whole is that it is possible to see Allaah, not rationally impossible; and they also agreed that it will occur in the Hereafter, and that believers will see Allaah The Exalted apart from the unbelievers.

He also said: “As regards seeing Allaah in this world, we have already discussed that it is possible, but the majority of early and late scholars from the adherents of ‘Ilm Al-Kalaam (scholastic theology) and others are of the view that seeing Allaah does not take place in this world.” [End of quote]

Allaah Knows best.
