Question:

What is the ruling on wearing a watch on the left hand? Is this a form of imitating non-Muslims?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible to wear a watch on the right or left hand. It is very similar to a ring. Anas may Allaah be pleased with him said:

•        "The ring of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was on this," and he pointed toward the little finger of his left hand. [Muslim]

•        "The Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, wore a silver ring on his right hand." [Muslim]

Wearing a watch on the left hand does not imply imitation of the non-Muslims because it is not a specific characteristic of theirs. In fact, wearing a watch in the left hand has become very common among the Muslims.

Allaah Knows best.
