Tried to save kitten but it died

Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. I feel really bad. There was a cat with a kitten in my yard. I was giving them food and made a shelter for them because it is winter. The day before yesterday, I realized that the kitten's eye was partially closed and that he could hardly breathe. Yesterday, I came to give them food, but the kitten's eye was totally closed and its breathing was even worse. I googled this and realized that it probably had pneumonia and rhinotracheitis. I took the kitten and put it into the bathroom that we do not use in the house. There is heating there. I put it in the box with some t-shirts and food. I tried to call his mother to come with him, but she is kind of wild and afraid of humans, so she did not come. I wanted to keep the kitten warm and bring it to veterinarian today and then give it back to its mom, but when I went to see it, it was dead. My heart is breaking and I feel bad not that I did not leave it with its mom. I am wondering whether it would still be alive now if it had stayed with its mother. Am I guilty for its death? If I am, then what should I do in order to show repentance? Thank you in advance!

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, may Allaah reward you for feeding this animal, and this is one of the acts of worship by which one gets closer to Allaah. It was proven that Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the companions asked the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )Do we get a reward by serving animals (by feeding them, taking care of them and the like)?” He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) replied, “You get a reward in every living being (animal).” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

It does not appear to us from what you mentioned in the question that you were negligent or caused the death of that kitten; rather, we hope that you will be rewarded for your efforts in trying to preserve its life. So you should not worry, and you should not preoccupy yourself by thinking about this matter; rather, you should be concerned about what will benefit you in your religious and worldly affairs. For more benefit, please refer to fatwa 301042.

As regards your saying, “I am wondering whether it would still be alive now if it had stayed with its mother;” the answer is that since Allaah decreed that it would die at a given time, then this would inevitably have happened. Allaah decrees things with some reasons; Allaah decrees that so and so dies due to an illness and so and so by being killed, and so on. So we cannot say: if it had not become sick, would it have died? This question is wrong. What Allaah decrees happens inevitably.

Allaah knows best.
