Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. Is it obligatory to have abltution when braking the fast? May Allaah reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is not obligatory on the fasting person to have ablution at the time of Iftaar (breaking the fast); however, it is better for the Muslim to maintain his ablution all the time whether it is the time of a prayer or otherwise. Al-ʻIraaqi may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote:

"It is deduced that it is recommended for the Muslim to maintain a state of ritual purity all the time and that it is recommended to perform ablution after Hadath (urinating, defecating, or passing wind) even if no prayer is due at that time. This is reflected in the hadeeth of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) when he said, 'No one maintains his ablution except a believer.' The hadeeth apparently indicates ablution all the time and not only the obligatory ablution at the time of prayer, and Allaah knows best." [Tarh At-Tathreeb]

Allaah knows best.
