Impossibility of Allaah lying

Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. I have heard scholars say that it is wrong to say that Allaah, The Exalted, can lie. Defects are not under His Power, since lying is a defect and Allah, The Exalted, is free from all defects. It is not possible for Allaah to tell a lie. Can we still say that it is possible for Allaah to lie? May Allaah reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means):

-  {...and who is more true in word than Allaah?} [Quran 4:87]

- {...and who is more truthful than Allaah in statement?} [Quran 4:122]

- {And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice.} [Quran 6:115]

Tafseer scholars commented on these verses saying, "It means that whatever Allaah says is the truth and that He is Most Just in what He commands."

Indeed, all of the statements of Allaah are absolutely true, there is no doubt or room for speculation about this fact, and all His commandments are perfect justice. It is inconceivable that Allaah would lie; it contradicts His absolute perfection. It is absolutely impossible that Allaah would tell a lie, and that which is impossible (does not exist because it cannot exist) does not belong to the realm of the ability and will. Allaah knows best.
