Loving one's non-Muslim country is not a sin

Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. Is it a sin for a person to love his non-Muslim country?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The love of one’s homeland (home country) – even if this home country is non-Muslim – is a natural and inherent matter, so it is not subject to praise or dispraise, with the exception of the consequences (effects and actions) that result from that love; if they contradict the rulings of the Sharia, then they are dispraised, otherwise there is nothing wrong in it.

Shaykh Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him said in As-Silsilah Adh-Dha’eefah, “Patriotism is like the love of one’s own self and one’s own wealth and the like; all this is instinctive in the human being; he is not praised for this love. Also, it is not one of the requirements of Eemaan (faith); do you not see that all the people are equal in this love; there is no difference in that between believers and non-believers.

Allah knows best.
