Statement of Ibn ‘Abbaas about Paradise

Question:

I have heard that some of the Companions disagreed with Ibn ‘Abbaas' statement about things in paradise being completely different in essence and resembling things in name only. Is this true?
Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have not come across any statements of the Companions that contradict this statement of Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with him.

Rather, what was reported from them confirms what he said; for instance, Tafseer At-Tabari said about the saying of Ibn Mas'ood and other Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) that the verse: {And it is given to them in likeness.} [Quran 2:25] means in color and in shape, but not (similar) in taste. We should point out that you have asked about this subject more than once, and there is no great benefit in investigating this matter; rather, a Muslim should be concerned about asking questions that lead to doing good deeds.
