Question:

Who was the Companion Al-’Arqam ibn Abi Al-’Arqam?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Al-'Arqam ibn Abi Al-'Arqam may Allaah be pleased with him was a noble Companion whose real name was ‘Abd Manaaf ibn 'Asad ibn ‘Abd Allaah ibn ‘Amr ibn Makhzoom, and his nickname was Abu ‘Abd Allaah.

Ibn As-Sakan may Allaah have mercy upon him said that his mother was named Tumaadhir bint ‘Huthaym As-Sahmiyyah, and he was one of the  people who embraced Islam in its early stages. It is narrated that he was the seventh person to embrace Islam. [Al-Haakim]

His house was located next to Mount As-Safa. In the early days of Islam, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to meet the Companions at his house, until they were forty in number with the conversion of ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab may Allaah be pleased with him. When there were forty Muslims, they came out [to declare their faith openly]. Al-'Arqam may Allaah be pleased with him participated in the Battle of Badr and 'Uhud as well as other battles.

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, granted Al-'Arqam may Allaah be pleased with him a house in Madeenah. He died during the caliphate of Mu‘aawiyah may Allaah be pleased with him in 55 AH.

Allaah Knows best.
